Object Select
Object Select in Microsoft Paint makes editing your artwork faster and more precise by using AI to intelligently detect and isolate individual elements on your canvas.
To use object select, follow these steps:
-
Start with an image or artwork in Paint.
-
Select the Object select tool from the Paint toolbar.
-
Hover over and click on the object you want to edit. Paint will automatically highlight the element using context-aware selection, without requiring you to manually trace or outline it.
Once selected, you can copy, move, erase, or apply generative fill to the object with ease.
Tip: If you encounter any issues with object selection, report it using the Feedback button.
Sign-in requirementÂ
These features make use of the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to generate images locally on your computer. There are no restrictions on how many images you can generate. However, to use these features, you need to sign in with your Microsoft account and be connected to the internet to access cloud services that ensure safe use of AI. Â
Privacy
Microsoft values your privacy and data security. We acknowledge the safety risks of AI generated images and hence follow the unique hybrid approach of running the necessary safety systems on cloud using Azure online services to help ensure the safe and ethical use of AI, while the image generation happens on the device.
The Azure online services perform content filtering to prevent the generation of harmful, offensive, or inappropriate content. Microsoft collects attributes such as device and user identifiers, along with the user prompts, to facilitate abuse prevention and monitoring.Â
Microsoft does not store your input images or generated images.
Content policy and responsible AI
Microsoft is committed to responsible AI practices and ethical use of technology. When you use any of these features, we apply content filtering to prevent the generation of images that may be harmful, offensive, or inappropriate. Content filtering is based on a set of criteria that reflect our values and standards, such as human dignity, diversity, and inclusion. Content filtering is not perfect and may not catch all cases of undesirable images. If you encounter an image that is inappropriate or unexpected, report it using the Feedback button.
You are responsible for using these features in a respectful and lawful manner.

Safety of minors
Safety for minors is paramount when using the AI features in Microsoft Paint. To provide full control, we recommend parents or guardians make use of the Microsoft Family Safety app in Windows to restrict usage of the app for minors. For details, visit Block apps with Microsoft Family Safety.
Content Credentials
We have implemented content credentials, provenance based on the C2PA standard, to help users identify AI generated Images. Images generated with Cocreator will contain C2PA manifest helping users identify that it is an AI generated image.
